Yes, I know we just posted a review not long ago, but with the site being new, we thought we'd try to give a little more content for people to hopefully enjoy. So this time I'm (Portable D) going to review my favorite game. Call of Duty: Black Ops on the Wii. I'm also aware it's inferior to the PC/PS3/360 versions, but I'm not focusing on the things that were left out. I'm going to focus on how well the game is, even with these flaws.
The first thing I'm going to talk about is the graphics. While, yes, they are not as good as the other versions (better than the DS one, though. But that's kind of expected), they are still quite good. Everything is still clear, and can easily be distinguished. So it's not as bad as people will make out, but it's not as good as they could be. But in defense, graphics are not what makes the game good or bad. It's gameplay, control, and story.
Now, the sound isn't that bad, either, but the gun sounds are different from the other versions. And the explosions from grenades, claymores, and grenade launchers do sound horrible. They sound more like a moderate pop than an explosion. And while the gun sounds do sound a bit different, they don't sound bad. The music isn't bad, but it's not very memorable, in my opinion. Not really my style, but I will admit that it always fits the mood well.
So, how does it control? Well, that depends. I've used both the Wii Zapper and Wii Classic controller, and both control just fine. I find the controller to be more accurate and easier to use than the Zapper, but the Zapper actually seemed to be more enjoyable for me because it gives a small feeling of being in the game. However, it's less accurate, and a little annoying to control. Most of the time you'll find yourself locking the camera in position just to be able to get a shot on someone. If you're a run and gunner like me, stick to the controller. The Zapper just doesn't work for it. However, if you're a camper, the Zapper isn't bad, but the controller is still better. It just seems the zapper really only works for campers.
Now, the singleplayer mode is fun. But multiplayer is the reason people play COD games, including myself. This game has a good multiplayer, though there are some things wrong with it. There's some new ways to play, including a Combat Training mode, which is good for practice or testing out new guns, perks, equipment or just finding good spots and learning maps. There is also Wager Matches, which isn't a bad way to get COD Points. And they are fun as hell. There is Sticks and stones, where you fight with a crossbow, tomahawk, and ballistics knives. My favorite is Gun Game, where you start with a pistol and get a new gun everytime you get a kill. One in the Chamber isn't bad, but I don't like it very much.
Continuing on the topic of multiplayer, there's still a variety of modes to play. All your favorites like Team Deathmatch, Free For All, Domination, Headquarters, etc. You have COD Points in this game, which are used to buy everything. Guns, grenades, equipment, attachments. You name it, you have to use points to buy it. Although that does make it easier to get things, since the only thing that relies on attaining a certain level is access to the guns. One of the faults, however, is that many of the perks aren't all that, at least to me. On the other hand, others are just great, such as Hardline (Reduces the ammount of kills needed for killstreaks by 1). Also, you can pick which killstreaks you want to use as well. There are many of them, and most of them are great. The RC-XD is just fun as hell, and the attack dogs will definately help ensure high kills.
Also, the Zombie mode is so much fun. It won't help you level up or earn you COD points or anything, but it's still fun. You can either do it alone or go online with up to 4 people. I spend alot of time playing this when I don't feel like playing multiplayer.
All in all, it's a great game. I will admit it doesn't look as good as the other versions do, and some of the sounds are a little worse, and a few things were cut from this version. I'm not going to try to make the game sound on par or better than the others, I'm only trying to say that it's still a great game, and is still very fun to play. You can have hours of fun in singleplayer, and endless fun blowing up zombie heads and other players in zombie made and multiplayer.
Overall I rate this game 7.5/10
