Upon arriving in New Phlan, we were met by Rolf. He showed us around town, then left us at the gate leading to the monster ridden slums where Old Phlan once stood proud. However, first we had to see the city clerk.
We entered the clerk's office, who comisioned us to clear the slums of monsters. We accepted, and set off for the smithy to arm ourselves up right for the task. After which, we rested at the inn so Sara and Joey could prepare spells. Finally, we were ready to delve into the slums and attempt to rid them of the monsters within.
Unsure of what we would find, we passed the gate leading into the slums and began searching the area. We could hear an alarm somewhere, and rats were everywhere. We pressed on, and soon found a room where orcs argues over some paper. We made short work of them, and discovered that the paper they argued over was in fact a Cleric scroll. Joey took it.
We wandered around, and eventually found a room where a Goblin was teaching other Goblins to fight. It was a training hall, it would appear. They posed no threat, and in the end, we took only what Joey's Detect Magic spell deemed worthy, enchanted Leather Armor. The enchantment was minor, but good enough for Mojo, who refused to where anything other than leather. We also found three enchanted broad swords, which Jeff, Mojo, and I took. (Everytime I've played this game, I only get Leather Armor +1 and a bunch of non-magical stuff. This was a first for me, so I didn't complain.)
Pressing on, we found a stable with some enchanted arrows and an enchanted bow. Since none of us used bows, we took them in order to fetch a profit. We also found a room with a mage alone inside of it. The mage's name was Ohlo, and he wanted us to go into the old Rope Guild to get a potion for him. We decided to accept, since he promised good payment. However, we would get to that once we had finished looking around.
We stumbled upon some feasting kobolds, who were none too pleased at being disturbed. We killed them, and found some magical bracers, which Sara took and slipped on.
We stumbled upon a secret room in the north-eastern section of the slums, which yielded a nice amount of money, as well as another magical short bow. Near there, we found hobgoblins arguing over gold. We killed them and took the gold. We found a hidden treasure, and took it. Among the loot was yet another magical short bow and a magical ring, which was given to Sara.
Wandering around more, we found an old gypsy, but decided to ignore the old woman. Across from her room were orcs using the old building for living quarters. We slew them all and found a magical flail for Joey. We decided that we had searched enough, and that we should rest for the time being, to prepare more spells and heal our wounds.
After our rest, we pressed on. We found a small hallway where goblin guards attacked us. It was a close call, but we managed to win. They weren't very tough, but there were far more of them than there were us, and for awhile, we thought they would never end. Finally, we emerged victorious and pressed into the next room.
The room was empty. What were they guarding? We searched for anything out of the ordinary, and found some loose floorboards. Under them was a chest with lots of money, a mage scroll, which we gave to Sara, and a magical shield, which I took.
Again, we rested and regained lost spells and healed our wounds, then pressed on. We began to wonder if the Slums could even be cleared. There seemed to be no end to the foul beasts. Eventually we found a hallway where we were attacked by a large group of orcs. The battle took a long time, but we won. Jeff and I were the only concious ones. We went back to the empty room, carrying Joey, Sara, and Mojo, and rested until they awoke and felt better. We then went back and broke down the door, where we found monster leaders gathered.
Even with the gnolls and ogre, it wasn't as difficult as we first thought, and soon won the day! None of them carried anything of value, so we left. We noticed that monsters were scarce around the area now. It seemed that with the leaders defeated, the rest were retreating to a new home.
We were set to collect our reward from the city council, however, there was one more thing we had to do, and we made our way to the Old Rope Guild. It's halls twisted and turned, but eventually, we found the shop and gained Ohlo's potion. It had an unpleasent odor.
We returned to Ohlo with his potion, and he took it and drank it quickly. Amazingly, he seemed to grow younger, full of power and energy. He rewarded us with money and a magic long sword, which did none of us any good. We then went back to town, and collected our meager reward from the council. We then went and sold whatever we found that we did not need, then lodged at the inn to plan our next move.
